As part of ongoing initiatives to promote Italian cinematic culture in Thailand, a recent open-air screening featured Giuseppe Tornatore\u2019s masterpiece, Cinema Paradiso<\/i> (1988), organized by outdoor cinema curator Skyline Film.<\/p>\n
The event took place on Saturday, 5 September 2026, against the distinctive backdrop of DIB Bangkok, the capital\u2019s premier international contemporary art museum.<\/p>\n
The Screening and Venue<\/b><\/p>\n
The event transformed the courtyard and terraces of DIB Bangkok\u2014a repurposed 40-year-old warehouse redesigned by architect Kulapat Yantrasast in the historic Sukhumvit 40 district\u2014into an open-air cinema under the Bangkok night sky.<\/p>\n
Guests enjoyed a unique visual experience set alongside the museum’s iconic installation of 11 natural stone spherical sculptures, taking in the evening atmosphere while listening via high-fidelity wireless headphones.<\/p>\n
The Film: A Landmark of Italian Heritage<\/b><\/p>\n
Written and directed by Giuseppe Tornatore with an iconic score by Maestro Ennio Morricone, Cinema Paradiso<\/i> remains a cornerstone of international cinema. Winner of the Special Grand Prix of the Jury at the 1989 Cannes Film Festival and the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1990, the film stands as a timeless tribute to the art of filmmaking.<\/p>\n
Told through the recollections of a prominent filmmaker, the narrative revisits the post-war Sicilian childhood of Salvatore “Tot\u00f2” Di Vita in the village of Palazzo Adriano (the real-life setting for the fictional town of Giancaldo). It captures the profound friendship between young Tot\u00f2 and the local projectionist, Alfredo (played by Philippe Noiret)\u2014offering a poignant, universal reflection on cinema, memory, and mid-century Italian social transformation.<\/p>\n
