The Elephant Chapel installation, conceived by architect and artist Boonserm Premthada, received a Special Mention at the 19th International Architecture Exhibition of the Venice Biennale. This recognition highlights the innovative and sustainable value of the project, which uses bio-materials such as elephant dung to create a structure that is lightweight, durable, and environmentally respectful. The Special Mention celebrates Boonserm’s pioneering approach in promoting ecological and creative architectural solutions.
Traditionally, brick structures rely on large quantities of material to ensure stability and strength. This raises a question: how can we create a brick structure that is lightweight yet remains durable, efficient, and solid, while minimizing material use? Elephant Chapel takes this reflection a step further, asking how it is possible to build a robust and lasting brick structure using bio-materials—in this case, elephant dung—with minimal material consumption.
The installation features a four-meter-high arched structure, built entirely with bricks made from elephant dung: strong yet light, minimal yet resilient, airy yet solid.
