Bangkok’s arthouse cinema programming is enriched with a special event dedicated to contemporary Italian cinema. As part of its Sunday Cinema series, Bangkok Kunsthalle is hosting a special screening of La Chimera (2023), the acclaimed film directed by Alice Rohrwacher, which premiered in competition at the 76th Cannes Film Festival.
Set in 1980s Tuscia, the film follows Arthur (played by Josh O’Connor), a young British archaeologist endowed with the uncanny ability to sense the emptiness of the earth and locate ancient Etruscan tombs. Moving between nostalgia, myth, and the subterranean world of tomb robbers (tombaroli), La Chimera offers a poetic, captivating journey into the sacred, loss, and beauty.

This screening forms part of Sunday Cinema, a biweekly film series curated by Rosalia Engchuan for Bangkok Kunsthalle—one of the capital’s most dynamic independent spaces for contemporary art. The series brings global cinematic masterpieces, Thai classics, and contemporary works into dialogue to address universal themes of memory, grief, migration, and community.
