Mariano De Santis is the President of the Italian Republic. He has no connection to real presidents: he is entirely a fictional character. A widower and a Catholic, he has a daughter, Dorotea, also a jurist. As his term comes to an end, two final tasks emerge during seemingly quiet days: deciding on two delicate requests for pardon. True moral dilemmas that intertwine with his private life in ways that seem impossible to untangle. Driven by doubt, he must choose. And with a profound sense of responsibility, this extraordinary President will do so.
Director’s Notes: La Grazia is a film about doubt—and the need to embrace it. This is especially true in politics, even more so today, in a world where politicians too often present packages of certainties that generate only harm, friction, and resentment. This undermines collective well‑being, dialogue, and harmony. Mariano De Santis is a man guided by doubt. La Grazia is a film about a moral dilemma: whether to grant clemency to two individuals who committed murder, perhaps under circumstances that might be forgiven; whether to sign, as a Catholic, a problematic law on euthanasia.
