“Talk Italian-Thai round (dining) table: Rice, Truffle and Sparkling Wine”

Organized by the Italian Section, Department of Western Languages, Faculty of Arts, Chulalongkorn University, in collaboration with the Embassy of Italy – Italian Cultural Institute in Bangkok.

This lecture aims to create an open space for the general public, students, scholars, and culture enthusiasts to engage in dialogue, exchange perspectives, and discover the profound connections between food and society. Participants will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in diverse cultural experiences.

During the event, you will explore the role of rice— ingredient found in many culinary traditions around the world—as well as truffle and sparkling wine, which reflect the lifestyle and identity of the Italian people. The lecture will guide you through cultural and historical dimensions, culinary concepts, consumption practices, and contemporary social aspects of both countries.

This event is not only a conversation about food but also a special opportunity to gain new insights into the culinary relationship between Italy and Thailand.

Insights

Pajaree Tachart is a lecturer at Chulalongkorn University. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Italian (1999) and a Master of Arts in European Studies (2001) from Chulalongkorn University, where her early research explored European policy on food safety. She later completed the prestigious Erasmus Mundus Master’s in Crossways in European Humanities (2007), conducting intercultural research on European perceptions of King Chulalongkorn and his experiences during his 1897 visit to Europe. In 2015, she received her Ph.D. in Italian Studies from the University of Rome “Tor Vergata,” specializing in the history of Italian cinema with a dissertation on Italian and Thai film propaganda from 1934–1943.

Emanuela Panke is the President of Iter Vitis – Les Chemins de la Vigne en Europe, a Cultural Route of the Council of Europe dedicated to promoting Europe’s wine heritage. A graduate of the University of Rome in communication sciences with a master’s degree in agricultural product marketing from the University of Siena, she began her international career in Paris working in events and at the Italian Cultural Institute. Returning to Italy in 2001, she built a strong career in agribusiness marketing, serving as deputy director of the National Association of Wine Cities and later working with the Italian Wine Union on global wine promotion initiatives in markets such as India, China, and Russia. After relocating to Sicily in 2010, she focused on the island’s cultural and agricultural potential, consulting for organizations including Gambero Rosso and Catania Airport. She has been involved with Iter Vitis since 2007, becoming its President in 2018.

Panita Silapavithayadilok is a lecturer at Chulalongkorn University. She graduated with First Class Honors in Italian from Chulalongkorn University in 2009, earned a Master’s Degree in Modern Philology from the Università degli Studi di Firenze in 2017, and completed her Ph.D. at the University of Sydney in 2022 with a dissertation examining the interplay of writing and photography in Tiziano Terzani’s representations of Indochina. In addition to her research and teaching, she contributes to program administration as a member of the Administrative Committee of the Undergraduate Program in Italian and supports community engagement through Chulalongkorn University’s Academic Services Center of Arts, offering Italian language courses to the public.
