Italian Jazz at The Bamboo Bar: Claudio Filippini Celebrates Mandarin Oriental’s 150th Anniversary
The Italian Cultural Institute Bangkok, in collaboration with CIDIM ETS, presents a special event as part of the Suono Italiano Jazz Session 2026 series, featuring renowned pianist Claudio Filippini at the iconic Bamboo Bar. This performance not only pays tribute to Italy’s rich jazz tradition but also serves as a highlight in the celebrations marking the 150th anniversary of the Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok—a legendary landmark of international hospitality and cultural life on the banks of the Chao Phraya River.
Since its beginnings as The Oriental Hotel in 1876, the property’s history has been deeply intertwined with art, literature, and design, hosting royalty, distinguished travelers, and celebrated authors over the decades. For the Italian Cultural Institute, this milestone carries a unique significance due to the architectural bond connecting Italy to the hotel: the famous Authors’ Lounge—the historic heart of the property—was designed in the early 20th century by the Piedmontese architect Mario Tamagno. Tamagno was a key figure in Bangkok’s urban modernization, designing some of the capital’s most iconic landmarks, including the Hua Lamphong Railway Station and the Ananta Samakhom Throne Hall.
This dialogue between Italian culture and the hotel’s heritage finds a natural continuation at The Bamboo Bar, a historic benchmark for international jazz in Asia. Over the decades, its stage has welcomed global musical legends, from Duke Ellington and Lionel Hampton to iconic figures like John Coltrane and Mick Jagger, maintaining its calling as a dedicated space for musical exploration and improvisation.
Carrying on this prestigious tradition, the venue will host Claudio Filippini, one of the most acclaimed musicians in contemporary Italian jazz, on Sunday, June 14, 2026. His performance will weave through jazz standards, improvisation, and original compositions, crafting an intense yet nuanced musical journey that effortlessly balances technical precision with expressive freedom.
The concert at the Mandarin Oriental rounds out a weekend dedicated to Italian jazz in the Thai capital. On Saturday, June 13, 2026, Claudio Filippini will perform at Alliance Française for World Music Day 2026 Italian Jazz Enchants Bangkok with Claudio Filippini at World Music Day 2026 – Istituto Italiano di Cultura di Bangkok, creating a perfect bridge between European cultural dialogue and Bangkok’s historic charm.
The event at The Bamboo Bar will take place on Sunday, June 14, from 9:00 PM to midnight. Admission is free, with seating available on a first-come, first-served basis according to the venue’s capacity.
